Yosifu
A Wild Artist Living in the UK
The Amis artist Yosifu was born in the Matailin community in Yuli, Hualien, and is currently based in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is one of the few artists in Europe actively participating in the international art scene with Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples as his creative subject, and is an elite speaker repeatedly invited by TEDxTaipei.
In recent years, he has been actively involved in and attentive to environmental issues, and has often boldly collaborated across disciplines with the fashion industry. In addition to continually innovating in his creative work, he continues to showcase new forms of contemporary Indigenous art in the art world.
His works break free from the conventions of traditional Indigenous art. Though they express childhood memories of his ancestral homeland and its ceremonial culture, their bold colors and striking themes create powerful visual impact. His uninhibited, dynamic brushstrokes transform tradition into vivid, vibrant hues of fashion.

Q & A
Q: How do you start your day?
A: Starting the day with happiness makes all the difference. Tell yourself in the mirror, “You’re really great! You’re really handsome!” Then learn to forget the things that make you unhappy.
Q: Where do you usually hang out?
A: The rice-field paths and seaside in Hualien’s Indigenous villages.
Q: What restaurant do you go to most often?
A: Stir-fry 100. It’s the most quintessentially Taiwanese choice, with a wide selection of delicious food and a relaxed, lively atmosphere. Every time I come back from the UK, I head straight there to eat.
Q: What do you do for fun after work?
A: Watching movies and going to the gym. Film is the fusion of all the arts, and one of the most direct ways for an artist to enrich their inner life. Working out is, of course, an investment in myself. I’m an idol, hahahaha!
Q: What’s the most recent book you’ve read? What insights or impressions did you take away after finishing it?
A: In her autobiography, the American painter Georgia O’Keeffe describes traveling to the very remote and desolate region of New Mexico in search of inspiration for her art. I really admire her courage and adventurous spirit! Life is about daring to take risks rather than settling into your comfort zone.
Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
A: Yuli Market in Hualien. It reflects the real lives of ordinary people. The lively, overlapping cries of vendors are so warm and welcoming, and you can even sample the food! How wonderful!
Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
A: Design and uniqueness.
Q: What is your impression of the hotels under Taipei Inn?
A: The service is excellent, and the inn’s minimalist, stylish design suits the contemporary urban aesthetic.
