Contemporary artist Huang Po-Hsun

Using “abundance” and “freedom” as the two central themes of his creative practice, he explores the reciprocal relationship between himself and his living environment, portraying a world that is both abundant and lonely, with a vivid and colorful appearance. His works often convey a buoyant sense of drift, a quiet solitude, an ineffable uncertainty, as well as sumptuous colors and an Eastern humanistic spirit.

His works continue to receive support from collectors across Asia, Europe, and the Americas, and he remains active in exhibitions and artistic creation year after year. In recent years, in addition to receiving support from national-level collection programs, Huang Po-Hsun’s works have also been featured at international art fairs around the world, establishing him as a contemporary artist with both artistic sensibility and creative prowess.

Q & A

Q: How do you start your day?
First, of course, I sleep until I wake up naturally (with a sweet smile!). After getting up, I drink a big glass of warm water, followed by coffee. Then I reply to emails and work messages. After that, I tidy up the palette from the night before and start painting.

Q: Where do you usually hang out?
Four or five days a week, I go for a run around the riverside park nearby in the evening. Watching the sunset always makes me feel at peace.

Q: The restaurant you go to most often?
After my evening run, I head to Yumin Street Night Market in Banqiao for dinner inspiration! It’s on my way home, with plenty of choices and delicious food. I don’t have any regular go-to dishes; I usually try to find something I haven’t eaten before. There’s a stall selling carrot juice or starfruit juice, and I think it’s pretty good!

Q: What do you do for fun after work?
As a full-time artist, my life and work are intertwined, so it’s hard to define what “getting off work” means. Before the pandemic, after finishing a batch of work, I would go to a nearby second-run cinema and watch movies all day. Now, I watch a little content on streaming platforms each night before bed.

Q: AI technology is advancing rapidly, and it can create many works in a short time. Do you think AI will replace artists?
It’s hard to say what the future holds, but for now, it doesn’t seem likely. Still, perhaps human art history will change through AI’s involvement, just as the advent of photography two hundred years ago changed the course of art history.

Q: What advice would you give artists who are just starting out and have an unstable income, when they can’t balance their ideals with making a living?
If you need to be sensible and get a part-time job, then do it—survival is important!! Taking on part-time work to cover living expenses while sustaining your artistic practice is a necessary step for most artists still struggling to make ends meet.

Q: What’s the most recent book you’ve read? Did you have any insights or thoughts after finishing it?
Some time ago, I was reading *Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind*, about how humanity has evolved and changed from ancient times to the present, and how this has transformed our way of life. More recently, I’ve been rereading Haruki Murakami’s novels. His steady, subtle, lingering, yet slightly fantastical style feels somewhat similar to what I’ve been trying to express in my recent work.

Q: What do you find most interesting or appealing about Taiwan?
Night market! When night falls, you can find all kinds of fun and fascinating things there~

Q: What do you look forward to most when staying at a hotel?
Whenever I stay somewhere new and explore the neighborhood, I feel as though I can embark on a new chapter of life or enjoy a whole new experience. No matter how many times I do it, it always lifts my spirits~

Q: What is your impression of the hotels under Taipei Inn?
So wonderful—especially the team responsible for the artwork. They go everywhere in search of great art to adorn the hotel, and they show such respect for artists’ ideas throughout the process. That’s truly rare! Of course, I’m also very grateful that this collaboration brought us together as wonderful friends!
